入围第67届威尼斯电影节主竞赛单元，中国导演王兵拍摄的首部故事片，根据杨显惠小说《告别夹边沟》改编，一部冷峻、直接的电影，几乎没有任何回避地回顾了那段历史。王兵将纪录片创作的美学引到故事片中，用独特、自信的视听语言展示了在1960年前后，人间地狱一般的夹边沟劳改农场发生的故事。1957年10月到1960年底，在这个位于甘肃酒泉戈壁滩里的劳改农场里，三千多名甘肃省“右派分子”被遣送到此，接受“收容”和“管教”。严酷的阶级斗争和那场著名的大饥荒很快把这里变成人间炼狱，农场内一半以上的“右派”因饥饿而死。1960年12月，时任中央西北局书记的刘澜涛在兰州主持召开会议，“纠正极左路线”，开展“抢救人命”工作，幸存者才得以从61年一月后陆续遣返原籍。影片从原著有19个故事里选取了三个作为基础：《上海女人》、《逃亡》和《一号病房》，剧组花了三年的时间去对当事人进行采访，找到了照片、文字、书信，（对故事）重新结构、重新调整，成为了现在的影片。
